May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half truths, and superficial relationships, so that you may live deep within your heart.

May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom, and peace.

May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation, and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and to turn their pain into joy.

And may God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in this world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done.

We are not to choose jobs and conduct our work to fulfill ourselves and accrue power, for being called by God to do something is empowering enough. We are to see work as a way of service to God and our neighbor, and so we should both choose and conduct our work on accordance with that purpose.

Is it any accident that the churches most skilled in not noticing this blatant fact that churches are taught and led by today’s Amaziahs, devoted to celebrating America as a Christian nation but willing to dismiss questions about economic justice as “atheistic Communism” or as unpatriotic “class warfare”?

Anyone ever notice that the church is quick to remind the government that the US is a Christian nation when it comes to marriage but strangely silent when it comes to the poor?
